Collaring the King — Tracking to Protect
During one of our recent Veterinary Safaris, AWCF assisted in replacing the tracking collar on the dominant male lion at Botlierskop Game Reserve. Collaring plays a vital role in modern wildlife management — it allows conservation teams to monitor movement patterns, territorial ranges, and interactions within prides.
This data is essential for maintaining balanced ecosystems, preventing human-wildlife conflict, and ensuring the long-term health of both individual animals and populations. By fitting and maintaining tracking collars, we turn information into protection — enabling informed decisions that keep Africa’s apex predators safe and thriving in their natural environments.
A Simple Solution to Keep Elephants — and Fences — Safe
During one of our recent veterinary safaris at Botlierskop Game Reserve, our team was called in to assist a large bull elephant with a growing habit of breaking through reserve fences. A dental brace was carefully attached to one of his tusks to protect both the elephant and the habitat on which it depends.
This simple, painless procedure reinforces the tusk and prevents further damage — allowing the elephant to roam safely within his natural range. The wire naturally dislodges after about three months, leaving the tusks and animal completely unharmed.
